Dear Member                                                                          July 2010

The activities for 2010 started with Ladies’ Day on New Year’s day when the female contingent of the membership enjoyed a glass or two of champagne with small snacks in the Club. This was followed by a very successful “Dinner Dance” evening at The Farmhouse in St Saviours on 30th January. It was very well attended and we had the pleasure of entertaining His Excellency Sir Fabian and Lady Malbon, the commodores and spouses of the RCIYC Jersey, St Helier and GYC. The official speaker was Capt. Barry Paint who wittily recounted his past experiences. The trophies were presented to the winners of the various races by Sir Fabian after dinner, following which everybody enjoyed a twirl on the dance floor to discotheque music.

The Frostbite series, sponsored by Heritage, had a record number of entries (with the exception of the first one that had to be cancelled due to weather conditions). All in all a very successful series and all skippers and crews enjoyed our renowned hot dogs in the clubhouse after each race.

The annual event of the “Fitting Out Supper” was held on 27th March in the clubhouse. It was a very pleasant evening catered by the Hougue de Pommiere. We had a full house and everybody had a great time.

The Grand National Draw, held on 10th April was an amusing day in the Club. Carolyn, our Honorary Secretary, organised the complicated draw and made it a fun event.

On 1st May we had the “Round Sark” race in which eight boats competed, with Moojo being the winner. On 15th May “Les Dents” took place with seven boats competing and Mad Cap took the first prize.

The “Cruise to Le Legue” was memorable in that quite a few boats entered, but at the briefing on the Thursday before it was decided to cancel the cruise because the weather for the return journey on the Sunday was not going to be fun for the participants. However our intrepid Rear Commodore, Stuart Crisp, on the Saturday morning decided to take his bicycle on the ferry to St Malo and cycle from St Malo to Le Legue. He arrived to a wonderful reception from the locals who lined the streets of Le Legue to greet him. Four RCIYC Guernsey members were already there. They were entertained royally and

had a wonderful time. Incidentally, Stuart also cycled back to St Malo to catch the return ferry.

We had the pleasure of entertaining our French friends from Carteret and Morlaix on 13th May. It is always fun when they come to our Club even if it is sometimes a bit of a squeeze!  We also had our annual  visit from the Torbay Yacht Club on 5th June. It is always a pleasure to see them. This happened to coincide with “The Oak Trust Impi Shield Race” which also took place on 5th June. It was once again a great success, although only one boat from each class finished the race due to the lack of wind. Altair (John Frankland) won the cruising class and Alice (Simon Henning) got the racing trophy. The reception took place in a marquee erected on the Careening Hard Arm. The whole event was very well organised by Ray Redelinghuys. I should like to offer our special thanks to Oak Trust for its sponsorship.

We then had the “Dinard Race” on 11th June; eight boats competed, seven finished and the winner was Alvin II. “Round Herm” took place on 19th June, ten boats took part and White Rabbit took first prize.

We also had a cruise to St Aubyns on 19th and 20th June. Ten boats entered and everyone had a lovely dinner at the RCIYC Jersey.

On 27th June we unfortunately lost the “Governor’s Cup” to Jersey, but I feel sure we will regain it next year. White Rabbit won the “Herm via the Tobars Race” on 3rd July.

From 11th to 16th July the “Tour des Port” took place when the skippers and crews of over 100 boats were invited to a Vin d’Honneur at Castle Cornet.

On Saturday 17th July the “Cherbourg Race” will start at 0830.

Apart from a fairly full programme of races up to 18th September which you will find in your RCIYC Race Programme 2010 there will also be:

27th-29th August - Clegg Gifford Cruise to Dielette

25th-26th September - Cruise to Beaucette Marina

We are still providing Curry, Pasta or Chilli con Carne lunches every other Wednesday. Carolyn will remind you by e-mail of the dates and a notice will be on the board by the entrance to the clubroom. Our very popular Friday evening Meat/Fish Draw continues to be well supported. I look forward to seeing you at these events.

I should like to take this opportunity to thank the membership for their continued support and a special thank you to the various organisers who make it all possible.

My very best wishes to you all for the rest of the season.
