Dear Member                                                                                  27th November 2009

As the year-end draws near and Christmas rapidly approaches, I take this opportunity to bring you up-to-date with current activities at the RCIYC.

Firstly and on a very sad note, I have to report that our recently retired Rear Commodore Richard Corcoran passed away at his home in Canada to where he had moved from Guernsey earlier this year.  On behalf of everyone at the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club, I have written to Richard’s wife Theresa and his family expressing our sincere condolences.

Socially, our Friday evening Meat Draw regularly brings in a great crowd – sometimes up to 50 or 60 members and friends.  If you are not part of this yet, why not call in and join us at the club?

Similarly, your Vice Commodore Enzo Diacono continues to organise the popular Curry, Pasta and sometimes Thai lunches on Wednesdays – check the board or ring the office to enquire about dates.  Despite a recent motorcycle accident, causing some considerable injuries, Enzo still intends to continue the lunches throughout the winter months - well done Enzo!

Still to come this year is the Christmas Party at the club on Friday 18th December and the Christmas Draw at 1230 on Thursday 24th December – yes, Christmas Eve - again at the club.

In the New Year, commencing 1st January, we have Ladies Day starting at 1230 – usually a great turnout (Michael and myself are the only men allowed to be present!).

The Dinner Dance and Prizegiving evening is on Saturday 30th January, at a new venue this time, the Farm House.  The menu and details are enclosed and I do hope that you are able to join us for this important annual occasion.

Our recent Laying-up Supper and the splendid Jazz Night (with live music and Real Ale!) were well attended and I thank you for your support.  The talk by John Falla was very interesting and enjoyed by a good number of members.

The social, cruising and racing programme for 2010 is well under way and we have some new cruises, venues and races planned for this.  The St Aubin’s, Clegg Gifford Dielette and Beaucette cruises are definitely to be repeated.  We will also be visiting our friends in Le Legue in May – a cruise not to be missed!

Racing starts again in January with the Heritage Group Frostbite Series and, before you know it, it will be spring again!  Our new Impi Race sponsored by Oak Trust Ltd will take place again in early June – lots of money won last time by a modest 25ft Bilge-Keeler!  A full racing programme is scheduled for the summer.

The Club Flag Officers and Committee work hard to encourage you to take part and enjoy the club facilities and events. Please support us whenever you can – it is always good to see you.  We have a good selection of RCIYC regalia on offer – difficult for us to display at the moment but we are working on it. Prices are on the board. Please enquire at the club for more details – what about a Christmas stocking filler?  Carolyn, Michael and Ted are always ready to help you select.

On behalf of the Flag Officers, Committee members and staff, I thank you again for all your support and wish you a very Happy Christmas with fair winds and calm seas for the New Year.

Yours sincerely

  John
